Census Summary Tape Files
Summary Tape files include the population, demographic, and economic data from the decennial census. Most users are aware that working with these files can be cumbersome at times. There is so much information included in these data releases that it can be especially difficult to identify which extract is appropriate for use. Often it is even more complicated importing these files into a resident database or linking particular tables to GIS layers. Listed below are the current summary tape files available for South Carolina with brief descriptions. ASCII tables by county, tract, block group, and block are available for download at our website. The tables are organized by summary file. Each table includes an STFID field for linking or joining the tables to GIS layers downloadable from our website.
The Redistricting Data (P.L. 94-171) Summary File contains summary counts of the total population, the population 18 years and over, the 63 racial categories, and the population of Hispanic or Latino origin.
Summary File 1 contains population counts and information [age, sex, race, Hispanic/Latino origin, household relationship, residence is owned or rented] collected from all people and housing units.
Summary File 2 contains population counts and housing characteristics for many detailed race and Hispanic or Latino categories, etc.
Summary File 3 contains detailed population and housing data (education, employment, income, value of housing unit) collected from a 1-in-6 sample survey and weighted to represent the total population.
These text files can be imported into a database such as MS Access or SQL server or added directly into your Arcview 3.X / 8.X project. The tables can be linked to the accompanying TIGER 2000 shapefiles downloadable from our website by using the STFID field. The metadata tables included with each dataset provide the necessary field descriptions. These files have been compressed using WinZip for size limitations. You must unzip these tables using WinZip or some other zip decompression software prior to use.
